MINI Derivatives

Results from the Mini Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) performed among adult Lifelines participants at general assessments 1A and 2A were processed into derivatives by the University Center of Psychiatry, according to the manual for MINI version 5.0.0.
These derivatives should be used to define if a participant meets the criteria for a certain psychiatric diagnosis (sections: mental health and secondary & linked variables).

The MINI derivatives can be requested in the Lifelines catalogue. When this data has been used in your research, you will have to include a reference to the the following paper:

MINI Versions

Derivatives are available for all Lifelines versions of the MINI.
Note that MINI v1 differs significantly from the other versions in that the available derivatives pertain to 'last year' instead of 'current' diagnoses and were made in R. For all other versions derivates have been calculated using SPSS syntax.
For the (digital) MINI v4 used in assessment 2A, items that were subdivided from the original MINI v2-v3 items were rejoined, which made calculations of derivatives and comparison with the other versions possible.

Mini update March 2025

March 2025, an updated version of the mini derivatives has been added to the Lifelines catalogue. This updated version included two aspects: 1) fix of coding error in the original script for panic disorder diagnosis, 2) update of availability of mini derivatives.

1. Panic Disorder Diagnostic Criteria update

To meet diagnostic criteria for Panic Disorder, individuals must experience at least four out of thirteen possible additional symptoms during their panic attacks according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Therefore, an individual that reports reporting that at least ten of these symptoms are not present during an attack, cannot meet diagnostic criteria for Panic Disorder and should be coded as a control.

A coding error in the original diagnostic script incorrectly classified participants as controls if they reported ≥4 symptoms not present during attacks, instead of the correct threshold of ≥10 symptoms not present. Additionally, participants with missing data on any symptom were mistakenly assigned “NA” for their Panic Disorder diagnostic status.

These errors have been corrected, resulting in an updated Panic Disorder variable and a higher number of subjects with PD. Consequently, the variables assessing “any anxiety problems” and “any internalizing problems” have also been updated to reflect these corrections. Resulting variables: to reflect this correction, the corresponding variables are presented in a version 2 variant (mini_anyanx_adu_c_1 → mini_anyanx_adu_c_2; mini_anyipp_adu_c_1 → mini_anyipp_adu_c_2; mini_pd_adu_c_1 → mini_pd_adu_c_2).

2. Update availability mini derivatives

Besides the resolvement of the coding error, the script has been converted to the new data release, providing a transition to the new variable names. Using this updated script, additional participants have been added to the available coded data:

  • Assessment 1A: ~200 new cases
  • Assessment 2A: >10 000 new cases (from incomplete release to finished release)
  • Assessment 3A: newly added
