Municipal codes

Lifelines has generated a list of municipal codes for each participant, one code for each known home address starting in 2006 (sections: demographics and secondary & linked variables).
These municipal codes correspond to the codes used by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) to collect data ("kerncijfers") about Dutch neighbourhoods, organised in tables per year.

Lifelines provides the municipal code per consecutive home address of each participant (since 2006). The Municipal codes can be requested through the lifelines catalogue.

In addition, Lifelines provides researchers with the CBS tables with the corresponding neighbourhood data for the years 2008-2019. These can be found on the global drive of the Lifelines workspace.

CBS Neighbourhood data include information about:

  • population
  • housing
  • energy
  • income
  • employment
  • crime
  • companies
  • amenities
  • urbanisation

Besides CBS Neighbourhood data, CBS socioeconomic status scores are available as well.

Explanation of municipal codes

Lifelines participants may have changed their home address during their participation to Lifelines (up to 28 changes have been reported). The variables municipalcode_startdate_all_l_1_01 and municipalcode_enddate_all_l_1_01 provide the start date, respectively end date of the first known home address of a participant since 2006; municipalcode_startdate_all_l_1_02 and municipalcode_enddate_all_l_1_02 provide the start and end date of the second home address (and so on until the last known home address).

The municipal code of a specific address may change over the years (due to municipal reorganization). Therefore, we provide the municipal codes of a given address for all years between 2008 and 2019.\\The variable municipalcode_2008_all_l_1_01 provides you with the municipal code of the participant’s first known home address according to the CBS classification in 2008. The variable municipalcode_2009_all_l_1_01 provides you with the municipal code of the participant’s first known home address according to the classification in 2009. Likewise, municipalcode_2008_all_l_1_02 provides you with the municipal code of the participant’s second known home address according to the classification in 2008.
Thus, the year in the variable name (e.g., 2008) does not refer to the municipal code of a participant’s home address in 2008, but to the name of the municipal code in 2008 (whether it be of the first or last known home address of that participant). Whether a municipal code has changed can thus be deduced from comparing the different years (2008, 2009, until 2019).
